Code P0116 - Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor

NOTE: If Codes P0117 and/or P0118 also exist, service them first.
  1. Connect and operate scan tester, following manufacturer's instructions. Start and run engine at 3000 RPM until fan comes on, then allow it to idle. Read engine coolant temperature. If indicated coolant temperature is not 194-221°F (90-105°C), go to next step. If indicated coolant temperature is 194-221°F (90-105°C), problem is intermittent. Inspect for poor connections or loose wires at ECT sensor and ECM, then repair as necessary.
  2. Inspect cooling system. Repair as necessary. If cooling system is okay, replace ECT sensor.
