Code P0500 - Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)

  1. Connect and operate scan tester, following manufacturer's instructions. Test-drive vehicle. Read vehicle speed. If scan tester does not indicate correct speed, go to next step. If scan tester indicates correct speed, problem is intermittent. Inspect for poor connections or loose wires associated with VSS sensor, then repair as necessary.
  2. Turn ignition off. Block rear wheels. Set parking brake. Raise and support front of vehicle. Turn ignition on. Block right front wheel. Slowly rotate left front wheel while measuring voltage between 26-pin ECM connector terminal 26 (Brown/Black wire) and ECM 16-pin ECM connector terminal No. 13 (Orange wire).
  3. If voltage does not pulse from zero to 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage pulses from zero to 5 volts, temporarily substitute known good ECM, then retest system.
  4. Inspect for open or short in Orange wire between ECM and VSS. Repair as necessary. If wire is okay, replace VSS.
