Code P1297 - Electrical Load Detector (Eld)

  1. Connect and operate scan tester, following manufacturer's instructions. Clear codes. Start engine. Turn headlights on. Retrieve codes. If Code 1297 appears, go to next step. If Code P1297 does not appear, problem is intermittent. Inspect for poor connections or loose wires associated with ELD sensor, then repair as necessary.
  2. Turn ignition and headlights off. Unplug ELD connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between Black/Yellow wire at ELD harness connector and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open Black/Yellow wire between ELD connector and fuse panel.
  3. Measure voltage between ELD harness connector terminal No. 2 (Green/Red wire) and ground. If voltage is not about 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is about 5 volts, temporarily substitute known good ELD, then retest system.
  4. Turn ignition off. Unplug 22-pin connector from ECM. Test for continuity between harness connector pin No. 16 (Green/Red wire) and ground. If continuity exists, repair shorted Green/Red wire. If continuity does not exist, temporarily substitute known good ECM, then retest system.
