Cranking Test
- Connect starter system tester to battery and perform starter cranking test. If starter tester is not available, connect a voltmeter and ammeter to battery. See Fig 1
. Disconnect fuse No. 33 (15 or 20-amp) from underhood fuse/relay box.
- Use remote starter switch to crank engine. Check cranking voltage and current draw. Ensure voltage is at least 8.5 volts. Current draw should be less than 350 amps on 2.3CL, or 380 amps on 3.0CL. Cranking speed should be greater than 100 RPM. If cranking speed is less than 100 RPM, check for loose battery or starter terminals, worn starter brushes, open commutator segments, dirty or damaged helical spline, or defective drive gear or drive gear overrunning clutch.
