Starter Engagement Check

  1. Disconnect the 8-pin and 6-pin connector from the Ignition Control Module (ICM). See Fig 1 .
  2. With the shift lever in Park or Neutral, turn the ignition switch to START (III). The starter should crank the engine. If the starter does not crank the engine, go to next step. If it cranks the engine erratically or too slowly, go to WEAR AND DAMAGE CHECK  .
  3. Check the battery, battery positive cable, ground, starter cut relay, and the wire connections for looseness and corrosion. Test again. If the starter still does not crank the engine, go to next step.
  4. Unplug the connector (Black/White wire) from the starter. Ensure the shift lever is in Park or Neutral, connect a jumper wire from the battery positive (+) terminal to the solenoid terminal. The starter should crank the engine. If the starter still does not crank the engine, remove it, and diagnose its internal problem. If the starter cranks the engine, go to next step and continue the test. See Fig 2 .
  5. Check the ignition switch, starter cut relay and check for an open in the wire between the ignition switch and starter.
  6. Check the immobilizer system. See appropriate IMMOBILIZER article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
