Test HU: Air Intake & Throttle Body: Testing

CAUTION: DO NOT use compressed air to clean air cleaner element.

  1. 1) Check Air Cleaner Housing & Element Condition
Inspect air cleaner housing, inlet air ducts, and connecting components for damage, blockage, looseness, or missing fasteners. Inspect air cleaner element for dirt. Clean or replace as necessary. If air filter is okay, go to next step.
  2. NOTE: Go to TEST DC: MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR  for MAF electronic component diagnosis.

  3. 2) Check Mass Airflow Sensor
Visually inspect Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor for loose mounting, damaged electrical connector, damaged heated resistor or torn or restricted protective screen. Replace MAF sensor if any damage is detected. If MAF sensor passes visual inspection, go to next step.
  4. 3) Check Resonance Chambers Condition

Visually inspect resonance chambers for cracks, pinched hose connection or other damage that may allow unfiltered air or moisture into system. Repair or replace resonance chamber as necessary. If resonance chambers are okay, go to next step.
  5. 4) Check Throttle Linkage

Inspect throttle cable for proper installation and free operation. Repair or replace components as necessary. If throttle cable and linkage operates freely, go to next step.
  6. NOTE: Go to TEST DH: THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR  for electronic component diagnosis.

  7. 5) Check Throttle Body Condition
Remove air intake tube and check for oil sludge or residue in throttle body. Inspect throttle body and components for cracks, looseness, physical damage, poor vacuum or electrical connections. Check throttle lever for freedom of movement. Repair or replace components as necessary. If throttle body and attachments are okay, go to next step.
  8. CAUTION: DO NOT remove thin sealant coating from throttle bore.

  9. 6) Check Throttle Valve
Remove throttle body from engine. Ensure that throttle lever moves smoothly from fully closed to fully open position. Check for loose, bent, or damaged valves, and for contamination that can cause binding. Repair or replace components as necessary. If throttle valve operates freely, return to symptom that directed you here. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under SYMPTOMS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - VILLAGER article.
