Engine Running Self-Test

  1. This is a dynamic check of system sensors and output devices under actual operating conditions and at normal operating temperature. Any faults must be present at time of test to be detected. Connect tester to vehicle Self-Test connector, but leave jumper to input disconnected. See Figure for correct VOM connections.
  2. Start engine and run it at 1500 RPM for 2 minutes to warm up EGO sensor. Turn engine off and wait 10 seconds. Insert jumper to activate Self-Test. Start engine.
  3. Engine ID code will be displayed first, followed by the Dynamic Response code (single digit) after a 6-20 second pause. When Dynamic Response code is displayed, a brief WOT test must be made. If WOT test is not done properly or within 15 seconds, code 77 will be displayed. Next display of codes will be On Demand service codes, which should be recorded. If any codes appear, refer to the proper test shown in the reference table.
NOTE: When any repair has been completed, Quick Test MUST be repeated BEFORE attempting to repair any other problems identified by service codes. Proceed with repair as indicated by ENGINE RUNNING SELF-TEST RESULTS  table.
