Description & Operation
All Matrix models use a compact and lightweight Planetary reduction-segment conductor motor (PS).
PS starters use a square wire coil. The shape of the wire allows the surface area to act as a commutator would in traditional round wire coil starters. Elimination of the traditional commutator lightens and shortens the starter.
Permanent magnets are used to fulfil the traditional role of a field coil. The permanent magnets are classified using two types, main magnets and interpolar magnets. The magnets are arranged alternately inside the yoke to increase magnetic flux and to shorten the length of the yoke.
Integration of square shaped conductors and permanent magnets, results in improvement of torque output of 1.6 KW, and shortening overall length to 5.2 in (132 mm).
Starter relay is used to energize starter. It also uses a park/neutral switch on automatic transmission models, or clutch start switch on manual transmission models in the power circuit energizing starter relay. On models with theft deterrent system, theft deterrent system ECU monitors ignition key status as an arming status factor. The theft deterrent system ECU is connected to the starter cut relay which controls power to the starter relay.
