Code 5: Map Sensor

NOTE: For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article. For vacuum diagrams, see VACUUM DIAGRAMS article.
  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect alternator sense fuse in under-hood relay box for 10 seconds to reset ECU. Start engine and observe CHECK ENGINE and LED lights. If lights are off, problem is intermittent. Check vacuum hose No. 4 for cracks, leaks or crimping. Test drive and check again.
  2. If CHECK ENGINE light is on and LED indicates Code 5, turn ignition off. Using a "T" fitting, connect a hand-held vacuum pump/gauge between MAP sensor vacuum hose from vacuum manifold. Start engine. If vacuum is not present, check hoses and repair as necessary. If hoses are okay, replace MAP sensor. If vacuum is present and holds, turn ignition off.
  3. Connect a hand held vacuum pump to hose No. 4 and apply vacuum. If vacuum does not hold, check hose No. 4 and replace as necessary. If vacuum holds, connect MAP Sensor Test Harness (07GMJ-ML80100) between sensor and harness. Turn ignition on.
  4. Measure voltage between White (positive) and Green (negative) wire terminals. If approximately 3 volts is not present, replace MAP sensor. If approximately 3 volts is present, substitute a known good ECU. If system operates properly, replace original ECU.
