Code 9: CYL Sensor

NOTE: For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article. For vacuum diagrams, see VACUUM DIAGRAMS article.
  1. Turn ignition off. Remove alternator sense fuse in under-hood relay box for 10 seconds to reset ECU. Start engine and observe CHECK ENGINE and Red LED lights. If lights are off, problem is intermittent. Check for poor or loose connections at CRK/CYL sensor connector, connector C305 and C102 at right shock tower. Test drive vehicle and check again.
  2. If CHECK ENGINE light is on and Red LED indicates code 9, turn engine off. Disconnect 4-pin connector near CRANK/CYL sensor. Measure resistance between White and Orange wire terminals at sensor. If reading is not 500-1000 ohms, replace CRANK/CYL sensor. If reading is within specification, proceed to next step.
  3. Check continuity between ground and White wire terminal. Check continuity between ground and Orange wire terminal. If continuity exists, replace CRANK/CYL sensor. If no continuity exists, proceed to next step. Reconnect sensor connector. Connect ECU test harness to main wire harness side only.
  4. Check resistance between harness terminals C1 and C2. See Figure . Resistance should be 500-1000 ohms. If resistance not within specification, repair open in Orange and/or White wire. If resistance is within specification, check continuity between terminal C1 and ground.
  5. If continuity is present, repair short to ground in Orange wire between ECU terminal C1 and 4-pin sensor connector. If continuity is not present, substitute a known good ECU and retest. If condition goes away, replace original ECU.
