Abs Function Test: Notes
WARNING:
DO NOT drive vehicle with ALB checker connected to vehicle. A reduction or complete loss of braking can occur.
NOTE:
Perform ABS function test after any ABS component repair or replacement, system bleeding or repair affecting sensors or wiring. Use appropriate model of ALB checker. See ALB CHECKER MODEL IDENTIFICATION
table.

ALB checker is designed to confirm proper operation of the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) by simulating each system function and operating condition. Before using checker, confirm ANTILOCK, ABS or ABS icon indicator light is not indicating some other problem with the system. ANTILOCK, ABS or ABS icon light should illuminate when ignition is first turned on and then go off and stay off one second after engine is started. ALB checker should be used through modes, 1-5, to confirm proper operation of system, in any one of the following situations:
- After replacing any anti-lock brake system component.
- After replacing or bleeding the system fluid (zero mode not necessary).
- After any body or suspension repair that may have affected sensors or their wiring.
- Park vehicle on level ground, and block wheels. Set transmission in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T). Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect 6-pin inspection connector from connector cover (located under glove compartment). Connect appropriate ALB checker to 6-pin inspection connector. See Figure .
- Start engine release parking brake. Turn MODE SELECTOR switch to 1. Push the START TEST button. See Fig 1 . Test in progress light should illuminate. In one or two more seconds, all four monitor lights should illuminate. If not, ALB checker is faulty. ANTILOCK, ABS or ABS icon indicator light should not illuminate. If ANTILOCK, ABS or ABS icon indicator light illuminates, check for faulty connections at checker harness to 6-pin connector.
- Turn MODE SELECTOR switch to 2.
- Depress brake pedal firmly and push START TEST switch. ANTILOCK, ABS or ABS icon indicator light should not illuminate while the TEST IN PROGRESS light is illuminated. There should be kickback on the brake pedal. If not as described, go to TROUBLE SHOOTING .
- Turn MODE SELECTOR switch to 3, 4 and 5. Perform step 4 for each test mode position. If little or no kickback is felt from the brake pedal in modes 2-5, repeat function test of modes 1-5 several times before beginning to troubleshoot other parts of the system. See ALB CHECKER MODES .
NOTE:
When test in progress indicator is illuminated, do not turn mode selector switch. The operation sequence simulated by modes 2, 3, 4 and 5 is an acceleration sequence to deceleration sequence with kickbacks. Elapsed time of this sequence is about 30 seconds.
