Testing Procedure

When the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) has been reported on, there is a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) stored in the ECM. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  .

With the OBD-II scan tool, check the DTC and note it. Also check and note the freeze frame data. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  and begin troubleshooting. See the OBD-II scan tool or Honda PGM Tester user's manuals for specific operating instructions. The scan tool or tester can read the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC), freeze frame data, current data, and other Engine Control Module (ECM) data.

Freeze frame data indicates the engine conditions when the first malfunction, misfire or fuel trim malfunction was detected. It can be useful information when troubleshooting. The blinking of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) with the SCS service connector connected will also indicate DTCs. Reset the ECM and recheck for DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  .

After any troubleshooting, remove the SCS Service Connector if it is connected. If the SCS service connector is connected and there are no DTCs stored in the ECM, the MIL will stay on when the ignition switch is turned on. Reset the ECM. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  . Turn the ignition switch OFF. Disconnect the OBD-II scan tool or Honda PGM Tester from the Data Link Connector.

If ECM has been replaced as part of a diagnostic or repair procedure, the immobilizer code will need to be rewritten. See IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM  .
