BRAKELIGHT Failure Sensor Test

  1. Ensure brakelights come on when brake pedal is depressed. If one bulb does not come on, check bulb condition. Repair as necessary and recheck. If all brakelights come on, go to next step. If no brakelights come on, check brakelight system. See EXTERIOR LIGHTS article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section.
  2. Open trunk. Remove taillight access panel from left taillight. Access brakelight failure sensor. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect brakelight failure sensor 6-pin connector. Connect a fused jumper wire between brakelight failure sensor 6-pin connector White/Green wire terminal and ground. Turn ignition switch to ON position. BRAKE LAMP indicator should not come on. If BRAKE LAMP indicator comes on and goes out, go to next step. If BRAKE LAMP indicator comes on and does not go out, check for an open in White/Green wire between safety indicator and brakelight failure sensor. See EXTERIOR LIGHTS article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect a fused jumper wire between brakelight failure sensor connector Black wire terminal and ground. Turn ignition switch to ON position and depress brake pedal. BRAKE LAMP indicator should not come on. If BRAKE LAMP indicator comes on and does not go out, replace failure sensor. If BRAKE LAMP indicator comes on and goes out, check for an open in Black wire between safety indicator and ground connection. See EXTERIOR LIGHTS article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section.
