3.2CL, 3.2TL & MDX

  1. Connect a voltmeter and ammeter to battery. See Figure . Connect tachometer to engine. On 3.2CL and MDX, remove No. 1 FUEL PUMP fuse (15-amp) from driver's underdash fuse/relay block. On 3.2TL, remove No. 46 fuse (15-amp) from underdash fuse/relay block. Ensure transmission is in Park or Neutral. Turn ignition switch to START position. If starter cranks normally, go to next step. If starter does not crank, go to step  3 . If starter cranks erratically or too slow, go to step  5 .
  2. If starter cranks normally but will not disengage from flywheel (M/T) or flexplate (A/T) when ignition switch is moved back to ON position, check for malfunctioning starter solenoid plunger and switch. Also check for dirty starter drive gear or damaged overrunning clutch.
  3. Check battery and starter cables and connections for corrosion or looseness. Repair as necessary and retest. If starter still does not crank, go to next step.
  4. Ensure transmission is in Park or Neutral. Unplug terminal "S" connector (Black/White wire) from starter solenoid. Connect a fused jumper wire between positive battery terminal and solenoid terminal "S". Starter should crank. If starter does not crank, remove starter and check for internal problems. If starter cranks, check for short or open in Black/White wire between starter relay, ignition switch and starter. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Also check ignition switch and A/T gear position switch. See IGNITION SWITCH  and A/T GEAR POSITION SWITCH  . Repair or replace as necessary.
  5. Crank engine and check engine speed. If engine speed is more than 100 RPM, go to next step. If engine speed is 100 RPM or less, check for excessively worn starter brushes, open circuit in commutator brushes, dirty or damaged helical spline or drive gear, or faulty drive gear clutch. See BENCH TESTING  .
  6. Crank engine, and check cranking voltage and current draw. Cranking voltage should be 8.5 volts or more, and current draw should be less than 380 amps. If readings are as specified, check starter drive gear and flexplate ring gear for damage. If readings are not as specified, check for open circuit in starter armature commutator segments, starter armature dragging, shorted armature winding or excessive engine resistance. See BENCH TESTING  . Repair or replace as necessary.
