Oxygen Sensor

  1. Test continuity of harness between O2 sensor connector and pin 9 of ECU harness connector J2. Ensure that the wiring harness is not shorted to ground. Repair or replace as necessary.
  2. Test continuity between sensor ground (exhaust manifold) and pin 13 of ECU connector J2. Repair harness if needed. Test fuel system pressure and repair as required.
  3. Check sensor operation by driving vehicle with a test lamp (No. 1982 bulb) connected between pin "A" of the ECU's J1 connector and pin No. 21 of the ECU's J2 connector.
  4. Bulb lighted at start is normal operation for test circuit. If the bulb does not light after warm-up, the O2 sensor is functioning normally. If the bulb stays lit or lights after the engine warms up, replace the O2 sensor.
  5. Before installing new sensor, check for system failures which may have caused O2 sensor malfunction. System failures which can affect O2 sensor are: EGR control, canister purge control, PCV system, secondary ignition circuit and fuel delivery system.
