SERVICE INFORMATION

Information on coding the airbag control module has been revised to include new coding options that apply to m.y. 1998 vehicles. The repair information that follows has been revised, and will be integrated with the next Repair Manual update.

AIRBAG ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD)

CODE CONTROL MODULE (SCAN TOOL FUNCTION 07)

NOTE: Replacement airbag control modules are not coded. The airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) remains on if an airbag control module has not been coded. The airbag control module is coded using the VAG 1551 scan tool.

If the correct code is not displayed, or the airbag control module has been replaced, code the control module as follows:

  • VAG 1551 scan tool connected and "Airbag" address word 15 selected. Display will show the following:

  • Press buttons -0- and -7- to select "Code Control Module" function 07.

    Display will show the following:

  • Enter code number using VAG 1551 key pad:
    • Audi A8, m.y. 1997: 00224

    • Coding 00124: Rear side airbags INACTIVE

    • Coding 00225: Rear side airbags ACTIVE
    • Coding 00125: Rear side airbags INACTIVE

CODING TO DEACTIVATE REAR SIDE AIRBAGS

WARNING: Rear side airbags should be deactivated or reactivated ONLY with the customer's written request and signature. Disconnect the harness connectors for rear side airbags before coding the airbag control module to make the rear side airbags inactive.
NOTE: The rear side airbags can only be activated or deactivated on both left and right sides together. They cannot be activated or deactivated individually.
  • VAG 1551 scan tool connected and "Airbag" address word 15 selected
  • DTC memory checked

    Display will show the following:

  • Press buttons -0- and -7- to select "Code Control Module" function 07.

  • Enter code number using VAG 1551 key pad:

    • Audi A8, m.y. 1998-on: 00125 (rear side airbags INACTIVE)

  • Disconnect VAG 1551 scan tool.

    Switch ignition off, then switch ignition on.

    NOTE: After 4 seconds, the airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) must go out, indicating that there are no stored malfunctions.

CODING TO REACTIVATE REAR SIDE AIRBAGS

Repeat procedure for coding airbag control module and change coding back to original value for active rear side airbags.

  • Audi A8, m.y. 1998-on: 00225 (rear side airbags ACTIVE)
