Throttle Valve Control Module

NOTE:

Most vehicles are equipped with Electronic Power Control (E-gas) there is no mechanical connection between accelerator pedal and throttle valve. Position of accelerator pedal is sent to ECM through sensors located in accelerator pedal. Accelerator pedal position is a main input into ECM.

Throttle operation is controlled by the Throttle Valve Control Module (TVCM) located in intake manifold throttle body. When engine is running TVCM opens throttle precisely in accordance to position of accelerator pedal. When engine is running ECM can open throttle independently of accelerator pedal. Adjustment is carried out by performing adaptation of throttle valve control module, with VAG 1551 or VAS 5051 scan tool. See ADAPTATION OF THROTTLE VALVE CONTROL MODULE under SELF DIAGNOSTICS in appropriate SELF DIAGNOSTICS ARTICLE.

Throttle Valve Control Module (TVCM) located on intake manifold contains following components:

There are no serviceable parts in TVCM, housing should not be opened. Throttle drive actuator is an electric stepper motor activated by the ECM. Stepper motor opens throttle against spring pressure. Angle sensors are potentiometers, and communicate throttle valve position to ECM independent of each other. Angle sensors cannot be mechanically adjusted. Adjustments are performed using VAS 5051 scan tool in diagnostic function 04 - BASIC SETTING. See FUNCTION 04 - BASIC SETTING in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
