Turbocharger - Diesel: Operation: Notes

Air is drawn from the air cleaner, compressed and directed to the plenum chamber prior to being summoned by the intake manifold.

As engine load increases and throttle pedal is depressed, more fuel flows into the combustion chamber. As the air/fuel mixture is burned, greater volume of exhaust gases enter the enter exhaust system. This gas is directed to the turbocharger housing. Some energy contained in exhaust gas is used to increase speed of turbine wheel. The turbine wheel is connected by a shaft to compressor wheel. As compressor wheel generates speed, it compresses incoming air and forces a denser charge into combustion chambers.
