SUBJECT
M60 DME Engine Control Module EPROM Programming Update (Without EWSII)
SITUATION
M60 vehicles without EWSII which were updated using programming software 5.1 may encounter the following customer complaints:
- Check engine light illuminates when going downhill and setting Fault Code 201 and/or 203.
- Poor acceleration while engine is in the warm-up phase.
- Slight vibration during load reversal on 530iA vehicles when accelerator pedal is released and depressed.
- Cold start difficulty on 530i vehicles when engine temperature is below 40°C.
CORRECTION
Due to programming modifications as of version 6.0 software, if a customer complaint relating to any of the above is obtained, the EPROM in the Engine Control Module should be replaced and reprogrammed using programming software (disk A & B) V6.0 or higher. Note that once the EPROM is reprogrammed the control module will need time to re-adapt. Adaptation will occur during the first 10-20 inutes of vehicle operation under various load conditions.
- A replacement Engine Control Module EPROM must be determined by following the procedure provided in TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 12 07 95 (4273 ).
- Replace the EPROM in the control module by following the procedure given in TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 12 08 95 (4274) .

Parts and labor will be reimbursable under the terms of the applicable BMW New Car Limited Warranty 6 years/100,000 miles.
- If any of the following complaints are received use the defect code indicated below:
