NOTE: This Service Information bulletin supersedes Orange S.I. 12 13 96 dated October 1996.

The customer complaint will indicate the following:

ASC lamp is illuminated
"Check Engine" lamp is illuminated
Upon checking for fault codes the following are found: Fault Code 12 - "Throttle valve potentiometer" (in the DME) Fault Code 154 - "CAN accelerator pedal setting" (in the EGS/AGS) Fault Code 57 - "Throttle valve signal from DME" (in ASC/ABS)

A software error in the DME results in an erroneous setting of fault code 12 in the DME.

If a customer complaint is received:

The Engine Control Module (DME) should be reprogrammed using MODIC programming software version P9.0 or higher. Follow the reprogramming procedure as indicated in S.I. 12 05 96 dated July 1996.
After reprogramming the DME:
- Perform "Quick Clear" in order to clear all faults which may have set as a result of the reprogramming.
- Clear the "Throttle Position adaptation values" under service functions.

Parts and labor will be reimbursable under the terms of the applicable BMW Emissions Warranty.
