Engine Performance: System: Turbocharger: Operation: System

Air is drawn into the compressor through an air inlet duct. The air is compressed, which increases its density, and is then delivered, under pressure, to the intake manifold. As engine load increases and throttle is opened, a denser air charge flows into combustion chamber. As this mixture is burned, the increased volume of exhaust gas enters the turbine assembly, increasing turbine speed, compressor speed and output pressure.

This results in a denser air/fuel charge being introduced into the combustion chamber. This denser air/fuel charge develops more power during the combustion cycle than a normally aspirated engine of similar displacement.
