Alternator Indicator Test

  1. If VOLTS indicator does not come on with ignition switch in RUN position and engine off, go to next step. If VOLTS indicator stays on when engine is running, check generator belt. If belt is okay, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator connector and battery ring terminal. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between generator connector terminal "F" (Pink/Black wire) and ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check wiring for open or short, check connections and fuses.
  3. Measure voltage between generator connector terminal "L" (Brown wire) and ground. Battery voltage (indicators cluster) or 3 volts (gauges cluster) should be present. If specified voltage is present, go to next step. If specified voltage is not present, check wiring for opens or short, check fuse, bulb and in-line connectors. If no problems are found, replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  4. Measure voltage between generator battery ring terminal and ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check wiring for open or high resistance.
  5. Turn ignition off. Reconnect generator connector and battery ring terminal. Start engine and idle at 1000-1500 RPM for at least 30 seconds. Measure voltage between generator battery ring terminal and ground. If 16 volts or greater is present, replace generator. If less than 16 volts is present, repair or replace generator.
