Instrument Cluster Diagnostic System Check: Testing

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with instrument cluster. If scan tool is able to communicate with instrument cluster, go to next step. If scan tool is not able to communicate with instrument cluster, go to step 3).
  2. Using scan tool, display instrument cluster Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM  . If any communication DTCs exist, perform appropriate DTC test. See DIAGNOSTIC TESTS  . If no communication DTCs exist, go to step 11).
  3. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with other systems on serial data line. If scan tool can establish communication with other systems, go to next step. If scan tool cannot establish communication with other systems, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DATA LINE  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect instrument cluster Gray 24-pin connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using test light, backprobe between each instrument cluster power circuit and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If test light illuminates for each circuit, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate for each circuit, go to step 8).
  5. Using test light, backprobe between each instrument cluster ground circuit and battery voltage. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If test light illuminates for each circuit, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate for each circuit, go to step 9).
  6. Using DVOM, check for continuity in Gray and Purple wires between instrument cluster harness connector terminal B2, splice pack SP205 and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 2. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, go to step 10).
  7. Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation.
  8. Repair poor connection or open in appropriate instrument cluster power circuit. Clear all DTCs. Recheck system operation.
  9. Repair poor connection or open in appropriate instrument cluster ground circuit. Clear all DTCs. Recheck system operation.
  10. Repair poor connection or open in Gray and Purple wires between instrument cluster harness connector terminal B2, splice pack SP205 and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 2. Clear all DTCs. Recheck system operation.
  11. If air bag indicator operates properly, go to next step. If air bag indicator is inoperative, remain illuminated or flash when engine is started or when car is driven, locate and repair problem in air bag system. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  12. If ANTI-LOCK, LOW TRAC, TRAC OFF and LOW TIRE indicators operate properly, go to next step. If ANTI-LOCK, LOW TRAC, TRAC OFF or LOW TIRE indicator is inoperative, remain illuminated or flash when engine is started or when car is driven, go to ANTI-LOCK , LOW TRAC, TRAC OFF OR LOW TIRE INDICATOR MALFUNCTIONING  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  13. If automatic transmission control position indicator illumination operates properly when transmission shift selector changes position, go to next step. If automatic transmission control position indicator illumination does not operate properly when transmission shift selector changes position, see procedures in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CONTROL POSITION INDICATOR ILLUMINATION MALFUNCTIONING  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  14. If BRAKE warning indicator does not illuminate continuously, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator illuminates continuously, go to BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR IS ALWAYS ON  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  15. If BRAKE warning indicator illuminates when parking brake is set, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator does not illuminate when parking brake is set, go to BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR DOES NOT COME ON WHEN PARKING BRAKE IS SET  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  16. If BRAKE warning indicator illuminates when brake fluid is low, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator does not illuminate when brake fluid is low, go to BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR DOES NOT COME ON WHEN BRAKE FLUID IS LOW  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  17. If BRAKE indicator operates properly, go to next step. If BRAKE indicator is inoperative, go to BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  18. If charge indicator operates properly, go to next step. If charge indicator is inoperative, illuminates continuously, or flashes after engine is started or when car is driven, see procedures in CHARGE WARNING INDICATOR MALFUNCTIONING  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  19. If coolant temperature, door/trunk ajar, and PERF SHIFT indicators operate properly, go to next step. If coolant temperature, door/trunk ajar, or PERF SHIFT indicator is inoperative, illuminates continuously, or flashes after engine is started or when car is driven, go to COOLANT TEMP, DOOR/TRUNK AJAR, OR PERF SHIFT INDICATOR MALFUNCTIONING  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  20. If CRUISE indicator operates properly, go to next step. If CRUISE control indicator is inoperative, illuminates continuously, or flashes after engine is started or when car is driven, see procedures in CRUISE INDICATOR MALFUNCTIONING  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  21. If Driver Information Display (DID) comes on, go to next step. If DID does not come on, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation.
  22. If DID operates properly when driver information display switches are depressed, go to next step. If DID does not operate properly when driver information display switches are depressed, go to DRIVER INFORMATION DISPLAY SWITCHES ARE INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  23. If DID step dims when parking lights are on, go to next step. If DID does not step dim when parking lights are on, go to DRIVER INFORMATION DISPLAY DOES NOT STEP DIM WHEN PARKING LIGHTS ARE ON  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  24. If fasten seat belt indicator operates properly, go to next step. If fasten seat belt indicator is inoperative or illuminates continuously after engine is started or when car is driven, go to FASTEN SEAT BELT WARNING INDICATOR MALFUNCTIONING  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  25. If fuel gauge operates properly, go to next step. If fuel gauge is inoperative, inaccurate, or functions erratically after engine is started or when car is driven, see FUEL GAUGE IS INOPERATIVE OR INACCURATE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  26. If high beam indicator operates properly, go to next step. If high beam indicator is inoperative or illuminates continuously after engine is started or when car is driven, locate and repair problem in headlight system. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  27. If instrument cluster illumination operates properly, go to next step. If instrument cluster illumination dims properly using instrument panel dimmer switch when ignition is turned on, locate and repair problem in interior light dimming system. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  28. If LOW COOLANT indicator operates properly, go to next step. If LOW COOLANT indicator is inoperative or illuminates continuously after engine is started or when car is driven, go to LOW COOLANT INDICATOR IS INOPERATIVE OR REMAINS ON AT ALL TIMES  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  29. If low fuel indicator operates properly, go to next step. If low fuel indicator is inoperative or illuminates continuously after engine is started or when car is driven and fuel gauge shows more than 1/8 full, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation.
  30. If LOW WASH indicator operates properly, go to next step. If LOW WASH indicator is inoperative or illuminates continuously after engine is started or when car is driven, go to LOW WASH INDICATOR IS INOPERATIVE OR INACCURATE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  31. If oil pressure, change oil soon, service vehicle soon, or low oil indicators operate properly, go to next step. If oil pressure, change oil soon, service vehicle soon, or low oil indicator is inoperative or illuminates continuously or flashes after engine is started or when car is driven, go to OIL PRESSURE , CHANGE OIL SOON, SERVICE VEHICLE SOON, OR LOW OIL INDICATOR IS INOPERATIVE, REMAINS ILLUMINATED, OR FLASHES AFTER ENGINE IS STARTED OR WHEN CAR IS DRIVEN  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  32. If SECURITY indicator operates properly, go to next step. If SECURITY indicator is inoperative or illuminates continuously or flashes after engine is started or when car is driven, see procedures in SECURITY INDICATOR INOPERATIVE , REMAINS ILLUMINATED, OR FLASHES AFTER ENGINE IS STARTED OR WHEN CAR IS DRIVEN  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  33. If SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator operates properly, go to next step. If SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator is inoperative or illuminates continuously after engine is started or when car is driven, go to SERVICE ENGINE SOON INDICATOR STAYS ON AT ALL TIMES OR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  34. If speedometer/odometer operates properly, go to next step. If speedometer/odometer is inoperative or functions erratically after engine is started or when car is driven, go to SPEEDOMETER/ODOMETER IS INOPERATIVE OR INACCURATE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  35. If tachometer operates properly, go to next step. If tachometer is inoperative or functions erratically after engine is started or when car is driven, go to TACHOMETER IS INOPERATIVE OR INACCURATE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  36. If temperature gauge operates properly, go to next step. If temperature gauge is inoperative or functions erratically after engine is started or when car is driven, go to TEMPERATURE GAUGE IS INOPERATIVE OR INACCURATE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  37. If turn signal indicators operate properly, instrument cluster is operating properly. If turn signals are inoperative or illuminate continuously after engine is started or when car is driven, go to TURN INDICATORS MALFUNCTIONING  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
