Starter Motor No-Load Test: Notes
- Remove starter from engine. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
- Check pinion for freedom of operation by turning it on the shaft. The armature should be checked for freedom of rotation by prying the pinion with a screwdriver. If the armature does not turn freely, the motor should be disassembled. If armature does rotate freely, continue with starter motor no-load test before disassembly.
- Connect ammeter and voltmeter and battery to starter. See Fig 1 .Close switch and compare RPM, current draw and voltage to specification. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS . Starter is okay if no-load RPM and current draw are within specifications.
NOTE:
If specified current draw does not include solenoid, subtract solenoid hold-in winding current draw from ammeter reading.
NOTE:
Ensure switch is open before disconnecting starter wiring after no-load test is complete.
