EGR System

  1. Connect a tachometer to engine. Disconnect vacuum hose 3-way connector from canister, and connect a vacuum gauge to 3-way connector between EGR valve and TVV. When engine is cold, start engine and check that vacuum gauge indicates no vacuum at any speed.
  2. Warm up engine and check that vacuum gauge indicates no vacuum at idle and over 2 in. Hg vacuum at 3500 RPM. Disconnect vacuum hose to EGR valve and plug hose. Check that engine speed increases a little. Stop engine, push diaphragm plate by hand and release it. Check that diaphragm plate returns smoothly to original position.
CAUTION: If valve is hot, it may be necessary to wear gloves to avoid burning fingers.
  3. If a problem is found, inspect each part. Disconnect vacuum gauge and connect vacuum hose 3-way connector to canister.
