Ignition System: Testing: Coil

  1. Disconnect all electrical connectors from coil. Check resistance between coil positive and negative terminals, using an ohmmeter. Primary coil resistance (cold) should be 0.4-0.5 ohms on models with 4A-LC engines and 0.5-0.7 ohms on models with 4A-GE engines.
  2. Check resistance between coil positive terminal and high tension terminals. Secondary resistance (cold) should be 7500-10,400 ohms on models with 4A-LC engines and 1100-1600 ohms on models with 4A-GE engines. If coil fails any of these tests, replace coil.
