Charging System Check

  1. Turn ignition on. If charge indicator light does not illuminate, go to CHARGE INDICATOR LIGHT NEVER ON  . If charge indicator light illuminates, turn ignition to start. If engine cranks, go to next step. If starter solenoid does not click or starter solenoid clicks, but engine does not crank, diagnose starter. See STARTER article.
  2. Start engine. Check battery voltage after 5-7 minutes. If charging system voltage measures 13-16 volts and if the charge indicator light or voltmeter is operating properly, this check is complete. If the charge indicator light is always on, see procedures in CHARGE INDICATOR LIGHT ALWAYS ON  . If the charge indicator is inoperative, go to CHARGE INDICATOR LIGHT NEVER ON  . If vehicle is equipped with a voltmeter and system voltage is okay, but voltmeter reading is not 13-15 volts, go to VOLTMETER DISPLAYING HIGH OR LOW  .
