Ignition Timing
NOTE:
Verify that increased engine speed advances ignition timing.
- Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Ensure all accessories are off and idle speed is within specification. Adjust idle speed first if not within specification. See IDLE SPEED
under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE.CAUTION: Driving vehicle with jumper wire installed in test connector will damage catalytic converter.
- Connect timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire. Remove cap from test connector, located next to battery. Connect a fused jumper wire between terminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 5 (Blue/Red wire) of test connector. See Fig 1 .
- Check timing mark alignment on crankshaft pulley with timing marks on timing belt cover. See Figure . Ignition timing should be 4-6 degrees BTDC at 800 RPM.
- If ignition timing is not as specified, loosen distributor hold-down flange bolts and rotate distributor to obtain correct ignition timing. Tighten distributor hold-down flange bolts. Recheck ignition timing.
- Turn engine off. Remove jumper wire and install cap on test connector. Remove test equipment.
