Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) System Check? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to INSPECTION/MAINTENANCE SYSTEM CHECK  .
  2. Preprogram the scan tool with vehicle information before ignition is turned ON. Ensure vehicle is within the Conditions for Running DTC. Turn OFF all accessories, e.g., A/C, blower fan, etc. Set vehicle parking brake. Verify transmission is in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T). Start engine and operate at idle until engine reaches operating temperature of at least 158°F (70°C). This may be up to 8-10 minutes depending on the start up coolant temperature. Important: In order for the remaining portion of this test to run, accelerate vehicle at part throttle to 30-50 MPH (48-80 km/h) and maintain for 2 minutes or until the I/M System Status indicator updates to YES. When complete, go to next step.
WARNING: Road test vehicle under safe conditions and while obeying all traffic laws. Do not attempt any maneuvers that could jeopardize vehicle control. Failure to adhere to these precautions could lead to serious personal injury and vehicle damage.
  3. In order for the next group of tests to run, the vehicle must operate in the following conditions: Accelerate at part throttle to 45-60 MPH (72-100 km/h). Maintain this speed without changing throttle position for 2-3 minutes or until I/M System Status updates to YES. When complete, go to next step.
  4. In order for this test to run, the vehicle must operate in the following conditions: Accelerate at part throttle to 30-40 MPH (50-65 km/h). Maintain this speed without changing the throttle position for 3 minutes. When complete, go to next step.
  5. In order for the next group of tests to run, the vehicle must operate in the following conditions: Accelerate at part throttle to 50-60 MPH (80-100 km/h) and maintain speed for 3-5 minutes or until the I/M System Status updates to YES. When complete, go to next step.
  6. Idle the engine until the engine reaches operating temperature of at least 158°F (70°C). This may be up to 8-10 minutes depending on the start up coolant temperature. Accelerate at part throttle to 35-55 MPH (56-89 km/h). Operate the vehicle for 20 minutes at speeds of 35 MPH (56 km/h) or more. Operate the vehicle for 3 minutes between 30-50 MPH (48-80 km/h) with the throttle position steady. With a scan tool, observe the I/M System Status display. When complete, go to next step.
  7. With a scan tool, observe the I/M System Status display. Did all of the I/M System Status indicators update to YES? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to the I/M System Set Procedure for the indicated systems.
  8. Using scan tool, observe emission related DTC portion of I/M system status display. Does the scan tool indicate any emission related DTCs set? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no, system is okay.
