Fixed Column: Disassembly
- Remove steering wheel. See STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES
article in the STEERING section. Disconnect negative battery cable. Pry off retainers and remove wiring trough. Remove shift lever roll pin. Remove breakaway capsules. Secure steering column in a vise.
- Remove 2 lock housing cover screws. Remove lock housing cover. Remove washer/wiper switch assembly. Pull plastic cover up control stalk. Remove 2 screws attaching control stalk sleeve to washer/wiper switch. Rotate control stalk shaft to full clockwise position. Remove shaft by pulling straight out. Remove turn signal switch and upper bearing retainer screws. Remove retainer and lift turn signal switch upward.
- Unclip horn and key light ground wires. Remove retaining screw and lift ignition key lamp assembly out of way.
- Remove 4 bearing housing-to-lock housing screws. Remove snap ring from upper end of steering shaft. DO NOT
allow steering shaft to slide out of jacket. Remove bearing housing from shaft. Remove lock plate spring and lock plate from steering shaft. Remove steering shaft through bottom of column.
- Remove ignition key. Remove screw and lift out buzzer/chime switch. Remove 2 ignition switch screws. Disconnect ignition switch wiring harness. Remove ignition switch by rotating it 1/4 turn and sliding it off actuator rod. Remove dimmer switch screws. Remove dimmer switch from actuator rod.
- Remove 2 bellcrank mounting screws. Slide bellcrank in lock housing until it can be disconnected from ignition switch actuator rod. Place lock cylinder in "LOCK" position and remove key. Insert 2 small screwdrivers into both lock cylinder release holes. See Fig 2 Push in to release spring loaded lock retainers. The lock cylinder lower release hole is just above buzzer/chime switch mounting screw hole. Pull cylinder out of housing bore.
- Grasp lock lever and spring assembly and pull from housing. Remove 4 lock housing-to-column jacket hex head retaining screws. Remove lock housing plate and housing from jacket. Turn lock housing 1/4 turn to disengage from ignition switch actuator rod.
- Loosen shift tube set screw in housing. Remove shift tube through lower end of jacket. Remove floor plate and grommet from jacket. Remove 4 bolts and 2 cross straps from steering shaft flexible coupling. Note position of long and short coupling bolts for installation. Remove flexible coupling.
- Pry cover tangs from steering shaft pot coupling. Lift seal and cover from body. Drive small short dowel pin at edge of coupling body down into coupling and discard. Pull body off shaft and shoe assembly.
