Excess Decay

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION. For wiring diagram, see wiring diagram.
  1. Using scan tool, read trouble codes. If any Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS) trouble codes are displayed, proceed to appropriate test. See TROUBLE CODES table under TEST 1A. If no WSS trouble codes are displayed, use scan tool to erase trouble codes. Inspect vehicle tires. Replace any excessively worn tires. Perform TEST VER-1A. If vehicle tires are not excessively worn, go to next step.
  2. Ensure vehicle brakes are not dragging. If vehicle brakes are dragging, repair brakes as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1A. If vehicle brakes are not dragging, go to next step.
  3. With an assistant, road test vehicle at speeds of 20-30 MPH. Using scan tool, have assistant monitor ABS SENSORS wheel speeds. If all 4 wheel speeds are not equal, go to TEST 4B. If all 4 speeds are equal, go to next step.
    NOTE: Ensure anti-lock brake stops are performed on clean dry pavement.
  4. Perform several anti-lock brake stops. Using scan tool, read trouble codes. If scan tool displays EXCESS DECAY fault, go to next step. If Scan tool does not display EXCESS DECAY fault, go to step 6).
  5. Inspect tone wheels for damage (chipping or cracking). If tone wheels are okay, go to TEST 9A. If tone wheels are damaged, replace damaged tone wheels. Perform TEST VER-1A.
  6. If any other trouble codes are present in step 4), go to TEST 1A. If no trouble codes are present, ABS is operating properly. Perform TEST VER-1A.
