Speedometer Not Operating Properly

NOTE: After making any repairs, perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If any DTCs are present, diagnose DTCs before continuing with this test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no DTCs are present, go to next step.
  2. Perform self-test on instrument cluster. Press and hold TRIP/RESET button and turn ignition on. All indicators should come on and all gauges should move through entire range then return to lowest position. If speedometer does not operate correctly, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If speedometer operates correctly, go to next step.
  3. Using scan tool ensure pinion factor is correctly programmed. See appropriate pinion factor procedure in COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. Program pinion factor as necessary. If pinion factor is programmed correctly, go to next step.
  4. Start engine and test drive vehicle more than 25 MPH. Using scan tool, observe vehicle speed in Electro Mechanical Instrument Cluster (EMIC), Body Control Module (BCM) and Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS). If EMIC or BCM displays a different speed than ABS module, diagnose instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - SEBRING CONVERTIBLE, SEBRING SEDAN & STRATUS SEDAN article. If EMIC and BCM both display the same speed as ABS module, replace instrument cluster.
