Tachometer Not Operating Properly

NOTE: After making any repairs, perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If any DTCs are present, diagnose DTCs first before continuing with this test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no DTCs are present, go to next step.
  2. Perform self-test on instrument cluster. Press and hold TRIP/RESET button and turn ignition on. All indicators should come on and all gauges should move through entire range then return to lowest position. If tachometer does not operate correctly, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If tachometer operates correctly, go to next step.
  3. Start engine. Using scan tool, observe engine RPM in Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If engine RPM on scan tool is different from tachometer RPM on instrument cluster, replace instrument cluster. If engine RPM on scan tool is not different from tachometer RPM on instrument cluster, go to next step.
  4. Using scan tool, observe engine RPM in Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Body Control Module (BCM) and Electro Mechanical Instrument Cluster (EMIC). If EMIC or BCM displays a different engine RPM than PCM, diagnose instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - SEBRING CONVERTIBLE, SEBRING SEDAN & STRATUS SEDAN article. If EMIC and BCM both display the same engine RPM, replace instrument cluster.
