Steering System: Column: Installation: Installation

WARNING:

Before servicing the steering column the airbag system must be disarmed. Failure to do so may result in accidental deployment of the airbag and possible personal injury. Refer to AIR BAG, Driver, Installation .

CAUTION:

Steering column module is centered to the vehicles steering system. Failure to keep the system and steering column module centered and locked/inhibited from rotating can result in steering column module damage. Refer to CLOCKSPRING, Standard Procedure .

NOTE:

Make sure the front wheels are still in the straight ahead position.

  1. Install the column into the vehicle and lift the column up into place. Loosely install the mounting nuts (1), do not tighten at this time.

  2. Install the two mounting bolts (1) and tighten all four mounting fasteners to 27 N.m (20 ft. lbs.).
  3. Connect electrical connectors to tilt and telescope motors, if equipped.

  4. Center the boot for the steering column at the bulkhead (2). Install and tighten the two mounting nuts (1) to 7 N.m (62 in. lbs.).

  5. Connect the LED harness (1) and install the left side instrument panel silencers (2, 3).

  6. Connect the light switch harnesses (1, 2 & 3) to the switch located on the knee blocker trim.

  7. Install the upper portion of the knee blocker trim (2) by pushing on the knee blocker trim (2) to engage the upper snap retainers.
  8. Install the two side screws (3) and the lower screw (1) securing the knee blocker trim (2) to the instrument panel. Tighten the screws to 30 in-lbs.

  9. Install the hood release handle (2) to the knee blocker trim by aligning and pushing up.

  10. Install the end cap (1) to the instrument panel and engage the snap retainers that secure the end cap. Repeat on opposite side.

  11. If removed, install the steering column module. Refer to MODULE, Steering Column, Installation .
  12. Install wood grain trim panels on either side of column, if equipped.
  13. Install the steering wheel (5) onto the steering column.
  14. Install the steering wheel damper (4) and then install a new steering wheel mounting bolt (3) and tighten to 75 N.m (55 ft. lbs.).
  15. Connect all electrical connectors.
  16. Install the drivers airbag. Refer to AIR BAG, Driver, Installation .

  17. Raise and support vehicle. Refer to Hoisting, Standard Procedure .
  18. Slide the lower intermediate shaft (5) onto the upper intermediate shaft (3). Install a new  pinch bolt (4) and tighten to 45 N.m (33 ft. lbs.).

  19. Slide the coupler from the lower intermediate shaft (2) onto the steering gear shaft (3) and install a new  pinch bolt (1). Tighten the pinch bolt to 45 N.m (33 ft. lbs.).
  20. Lower the vehicle.
  21. Connect the negative (ground) cable to the battery. It is important that this be performed correctly.
