Test Procedure

  1. Check fluid pressure as follows to determine whether trouble is in pump or gear unit. Check power steering fluid level and power steering pump belt tension. Disconnect high pressure line at pump. Use a small container to catch any fluid.
  2. Connect hose of pressure test gauge kit (KM-354-B) to power steering pressure hose from power steering pump. Place gear selector lever in PARK (automatic transaxle-equipped vehicles) or NEUTRAL (manual transaxle-equipped vehicles). Open gauge valve fully.
  3. Start engine and let it idle. Turn steering wheel from lock to lock several times to warm fluid to operating temperature. Increase engine speed to 1500 RPM.
NOTE: The power steering pump could be damaged if valve is fully closed for more than 5 seconds.
  4. Close gauge valve fully, and read pressure. The pump pressure with valve closed should be between 8330 kPa to 8820 kPa (1208 psi to 1279 psi). With electronic variable orifice (EVO), pressure should be between 8500 kPa to 8960 kPa (1233 psi to 1299 psi).
  5. Immediately open gauge valve fully. Turn steering wheel all way to left and right. If pressure is within specified limits, problem is not in pump. Check power steering gear for leaks.
