Advance Components

  1. Ignition timing on 3-cylinder model is ECU-controlled based on inputs from manifold pressure sensor, coolant temperature sensor and RPM as detected by pick-up coil. On 4-cylinder models, distributors are equipped with mechanical and vacuum advances.
  2. To test mechanical advance, turn rotor counterclockwise and release. Rotor should return clockwise rapidly to original position. If rotor fails to return fully to original position, repair or replace as necessary.
  3. To test vacuum advance, apply vacuum first to main vacuum chamber and observe that actuation arm is drawn into component. Repeat process on sub-vacuum chamber. If either chamber fails to draw arm into component, replace vacuum advancer.
