Repair and Diagnosis: Electrical: Starter: Description
Talon with 2.0L turbo engine use a Mitsubishi reduction gear drive starter. Starter consists of a planetary gear drive and permanent magnets for current induction. Planetary gear drive is splined to both the armature shaft and overrunning clutch. Starter torque is transmitted to overrunning clutch pinion through planetary gears, which provide higher rotational speeds.
Talon with 2.0L non-turbo engine use a direct drive starter that is a conventional 12-volt, 4-pole brush type starter motor.
On all starters, a solenoid shifts overrunning clutch/pinion drive into flywheel when starter is energized. Starting system components include: battery, starter, ignition switch, starter relay, anti-theft starter relay (if equipped with anti-theft system), and a park/neutral switch on A/T models or a clutch pedal-mounted interlock switch on M/T models.
