Repair and Diagnosis: Transmission: Clutches: Description

Chevrolet and GMC vehicles use 2 types of clutches, a coil spring design and a diaphragm spring design. Coil spring single plate clutch is a dry disc type with no wear adjustment provided in clutch itself. Coil spring clutch uses 3 release levers for pressure plate actuation and coil springs for pressure plate tension.

Diaphragm spring clutch uses a single, slotted diaphragm type spring for both pressure plate action and tension. All models use mechanical linkage to actuate clutch. Removal and installation procedure and adjustments are the same for Chevrolet and GMC.
