Testing Headlight Switch

  1. Headlight circuit is powered (HOT) at all times. Headlight switch acts as grounding switch for headlight circuit. Ensure headlight switch ground is good at junction/fuse block mounting bolt, (located under left dash panel).
  2. To check headlight switch, push headlight switch on and put combination switch in low beam position. If headlights do not operate, use voltmeter to backprobe headlight switch harness connector terminal No. 5 (Green/Black wire) and ground. Headlight switch harness connector No. C-5 has 16 terminals and is plugged into bottom of junction/fuse block located under left dash panel.
  3. If voltage reading is more than 9 volts at terminal No. 5, backprobe terminal No. 12 (Black wire). If voltage at terminal No. 12 (Black wire) is less than 9 volts, replace headlight switch. If voltage is more than 9 volts, headlight switch is good. Repair ground wire circuit (Black wire) between headlight switch and junction/fuse block ground.
