No-Load Test
- Remove starter. Connect ammeter in series with starter motor and fully charged 12-volt battery. See Fig 1. Connect voltmeter to battery to observe voltage draw readings.
- Connect remote starter or jumper wire to battery and start terminal of solenoid. Crank starter for maximum of 5 seconds. Starter drive pinion should extend completely and quickly. Starter should spin smoothly at 3000 RPM or more. Current draw should be less than 90 amps at approximately 11.5 volts. Starter is in good condition if operates as stated.
NOTE:
The following solenoid tests must be performed with starter assembled, and field lead disconnected from starter at the solenoid.
CAUTION:
DO NOT
engage starter solenoid for more than 5 seconds during testing or damage to coil winding may result.
