Tachometer Test

  1. Start engine. Disconnect noise suppressor filter connector located on left hand strut tower, near bulkhead. Connect fused jumper between noise filter connector Brown and Brown/White wire terminals. If tachometer does not read correct engine RPM, go to next step. If correct RPM is indicated, check for poor connections at noise filter. If connections are okay, replace noise filter.
  2. Turn engine off. Disconnect fused jumper. Disconnect ignition coil connector. Connect DVOM between coil connector Brown/White wire terminal and noise suppressor filter Brown/White wire terminal. Measure resistance. If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair open in Brown/White wire.
  3. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin connector. Connect DVOM between cluster connector Brown wire terminal and noise filter Brown wire terminal. Measure resistance. If resistance is less than one ohm, check cluster printed circuit for cracks or poor connections. If okay, replace tachometer. If resistance is more than one ohm, check for poor connection at cluster assembly. If okay, repair open in Brown wire between cluster and noise filter.
