System Testing

  1. Disconnect vacuum hose No. 26 from vacuum hose manifold. Connect vacuum pump. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position.
NOTE: Engine coolant temperature must be below 104°F (40°C).
  2. Vacuum should remain steady. If vacuum does not remain steady, go to step 8).
  3. If vacuum remains steady, turn ignition off and unplug connector 8P on control box. Measure voltage between positive (Blue/Red) terminal and negative (Black) terminal on main wire harness.
  4. Turn ignition switch to "START" position. Check for battery voltage. If battery voltage is present, replace solenoid valve.
  5. If battery voltage is not present, measure voltage between positive (Blue/Red) terminal and body ground with ignition in "START" position. Check for battery voltage.
  6. If there is battery voltage, repair open in negative (Black) wire between control box and terminal G7. If battery voltage is not present, check positive (Blue/Red) wire between control box and control unit.
  7. If wire is okay, control unit is at fault. See ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEM article in this section for diagnosis.
  8. Start and warm engine to operating temperature (cooling fan on). Apply vacuum. Check that solenoid valve holds vacuum. If vacuum remains steady, check vacuum hose for proper connection, cracks, blockage or disconnection.
  9. If vacuum does not remain steady, unplug 8P connector on control box. Measure voltage between positive (Blue/Red) terminal and negative (Black) terminal on main wire harness.
  10. Check for voltage. If voltage is not present, replace solenoid. If there is voltage, control unit is at fault. See ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEM article in this section for diagnosis.
