Ignition Timing

  1. Start engine and run under no-load condition at about 3000 RPM until cooling fan comes on. Let engine idle. Pull out service check connector (Blue, 2-pin), located behind left side of glove box. See Fig 1 . Plug SCS Service Connector (07PAZ-0010100 ) into service check connector.
    CAUTION: DO NOT  attempt any connection to 3-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) located near service check connector.

  2. Attach tachometer to tachometer test connector (White, 2-pin with cover) located in right rear of engine compartment. Check idle speed and adjust as necessary. See IDLE SPEED  under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE. Connect timing light to spark plug wire No. 1. Check base ignition timing. Timing marks are located on timing belt cover and crankshaft pulley. Red mark indicates 15 degrees BTDC. White mark indicates TDC. See Fig 2 . See IGNITION TIMING  .
  3. Loosen hold-down bolts and rotate distributor to adjust timing. Tighten distributor hold-down bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 N.m). Recheck timing.
  4. Remove timing light. Remove SCS service connector from ignition timing service check connector.
