No-Load Test

CAUTION: DO NOT leave starter connected to battery for more than 10 seconds to prevent damaging starter.
  1. Clamp starter firmly in soft-jawed vise. Connect starter in series with a fully-charged 12-volt battery. Connect battery positive lead to starter terminal "S" and negative lead to starter case (ground). Jumper starter terminal "M" to negative battery terminal. See Figure-Figure . Drive pinion should extend. Remove negative battery voltage from starter terminal "M". Drive pinion should remain extended. Disconnect negative battery lead from starter case (ground). Drive pinion should immediately retract.
  2. Connect battery positive lead to starter terminals "B" and "S". Connect a 100-amp ammeter in series with battery positive and starter motor terminals. Connect cable from starter motor body to negative battery terminal. Starter should spin. Ensure starter rotates smoothly and maximum amperage is as specified.
