Ignition Timing: Inspection

  1. HDS DLC - Connect - Go to: How to Connect the HDS
  2. DTC - Check - Go to: How to Troubleshoot the Fuel and Emissions Systems,
  3. Engine - Warm Up
    1. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3, 000 RPM with no load (in P or N) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
  4. Idle Speed - Check
  5. SCS - Short
    1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    2. Jump the SCS line with the HDS, and wait more than 1 minute.
  6. Ignition Timing - Inspect

    		 1. Start the engine.

    2. Connect the timing light to the No. 1 ignition coil harness.

    		 3. Aim the light toward the pointer (A) on the timing belt lower cover. Check the ignition timing under a no load condition (headlights, blower fan, rear window defogger, and air conditioner are turned off).
     
    NOTE:  The other pointer (B) is not used.
     
    Ignition Timing 
    5±2 °BTDC (RED mark (C)) at idle in P or N 
    4. If the ignition timing differs from the specification, check the camshaft timing.
    Refer to:
    Camshaft Timing Inspection .
     
    If the camshaft timing is OK, check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good PCM.
    Refer to:
    PCM - Removal and Installation (9-speed A/T) (2019 2020 2021) or
    PCM - Removal And Installation (6-Speed A/T), ('16-'18 9-Speed A/T) then recheck.


    If the system works properly, and the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM.

    5. Disconnect the HDS and the timing light.
