Removal Procedure

  1. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to ENGINE SUPPORT FIXTURE in Engine Mechanical - LX5 (3.5L) or ENGINE SUPPORT FIXTURE in Engine Mechanical - L47 (4.0L).
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the front tires and wheels. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  4. Separate the ball joints from the steering knuckle. Refer to LOWER CONTROL ARM .
  5. Remove the ABS module from the bracket on left front. Refer to ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULE (EBCM) REPLACEMENT .
  6. Disconnect the AIR pumps (3.5L). Leave on frame. Refer to SECONDARY AIR INJECTION PUMP .
  7. Remove the air deflector. Refer to AIR DEFLECTOR REPLACEMENT -- FRONT .
  8. NOTE: RPO code L47 is the 4.0L V8 engine. RPO code LX5 is the 3.5L V6 engine.
  9. Remove the brackets securing the power steering lines to the frame. Refer to POWER STEERING PRESSURE HOSE REPLACEMENT (L47) or POWER STEERING PRESSURE HOSE REPLACEMENT (LX5) . Also refer to POWER STEERING RETURN HOSE REPLACEMENT (LX5) or POWER STEERING RETURN HOSE REPLACEMENT (L47) .
  10. Remove the fasteners securing the front transmission mount to the frame.

  12. Remove the fasteners securing the rear transmission mount to the frame.
  13. Remove the fasteners securing the rack and pinion to the frame.
  14. Using mechanics wire, secure the rack and pinion to the body of the vehicle.
  15. Support the engine frame near the frame insulators using J 39580 or suitable jackstands.

  17. Remove the engine frame insulator fasteners (3) securing the engine frame (2) to the vehicle.

  19. Lower the engine frame (2) from the vehicle.
  20. Separate the engine frame insulators from the engine frame. Refer to LOWER CONTROL ARM .

  22. Transfer all remaining parts to the new frame assembly.
