Testing Fuel Gauge

  1. Check if other gauges and indicator lights are inoperative. If these are also inoperative, check appropriate fuse in fuse panel. See GAUGES FUSE IDENTIFICATION table. Fuse panel is located vertically on left kick panel. If other gauges are operating and fuse is not blown, raise vehicle and disconnect fuel gauge harness connector at left front of tank.
  2. Connect a 12-volt test light, (with a 3.4-watt light bulb installed), between harness connector terminals No. 2 and 3 (ground terminal). See Fig 1 . Turn ignition on. Ensure test light is flashing and fuel gauge moves to "F" position.

  3. If test light flashes but gauge DOES NOT move to "F" position, replace fuel gauge. If test light does not flash, first check for open in Black wire (ground circuit) from instrument cluster's 8-wire connector. Second, check for open in Green/Brown wire from instrument cluster's 8-wire connector, terminal No. 1 to fuel sending unit harness connector terminal No. 2. If open in wire is not found, remove instrument cluster.
  4. Attach ohmmeter leads across fuel gauge test terminals on back of instrument cluster and measure gauge resistance. See Fig 1 . Resistance should be 55 ohms. If resistance is low, fuel gauge coil is shorted, replace gauge. If resistance is high, check for open wire to gauge coil. Repair as required or replace gauge.
