No-Load Test

  1. Place starter in soft-jawed vise. Rotate carbon pile to the off position. Connect fully charged 12-volt battery, as shown, in series with ammeter (100-amp scale), carbon pile rheostat and starter. See Fig 1 . Connect voltmeter (15-volt scale) across starter motor. Adjust carbon pile rheostat until voltmeter indicates 11.5 volts.
  2. Connect remote starter switch between solenoid terminals "B" and "S". Activate remote switch (maximum 10 seconds), and note reading on ammeter. Ensure starter rotates smoothly and maximum amperage draw is within specification. See STARTER NO-LOAD SPECIFICATIONS  table. Replace starter if it does not test as specified.
