ECM REPROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS FOR P0139 & P0159 AND REPROGRAMMING FOR SMOOTHER FEELING INITIAL ACCELERATION
TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
| HYUNDAI: | 2001 XG300; 2002 XG350 |
| GROUP: | 36 - Engine Electrical |
DESCRIPTION
(1) CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON - DTC P0139 & P0159:
Some 2001-2002 XG300/350 vehicles may turn on the "Check Engine" light and have the diagnostic trouble codes P0139 and P0159 stored in the ECM.
- DTC P0139: O2 Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Problem (Bank 1, Sensor 2)
- DTC P0159: O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction - Rationality (Bank 2, Sensor 2)
These diagnostic trouble codes can be set incorrectly under certain driving conditions.
If the codes are set erroneously (the front O2 sensors function normally when diagnosed using the Hi-Scan Pro), perform the ECM software reprogramming procedure using the Hi-Scan Pro as outlined below.
(2) SMOOTHER FEELING ACCELERATION:
The initial acceleration characteristics of some 2002 XG350 vehicles may not feel as smooth as some customers desire.
A previous TSB and ECM reprogramming addressed this condition (TSB # 02-36-007 ECM REPROGRAMMING FOR SMOOTHER FEELING ACCELERATION).
This TSB and the accompanying ECM reprogramming makes an ADDITIONAL improvement above and beyond the previous TSB, as well as a correction for the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON - DTC P0139 & P0159 condition.

CAUTIONS BEFORE REPROGRAMMING
- Conduct reprogramming with the ignition key in the "ON" position.
- Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or Hi-Scan Pro during reprogramming.WARNING: If reprogramming is interrupted, the manual update procedure must be used.
- Do not start the engine during reprogramming.
- Do not turn the ignition key off during reprogramming.
ECM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE
AUTOMATIC UPDATE PROCEDURE
- Remove the current system software card from the Hi-Scan Pro and insert the reprogramming software card into the Hi-Scan Pro top slot.
- Connect the reprogramming adapter to the Hi-Scan Pro.
- Connect the red 10-pin connector to the reprogramming adapter.
- Connect power to the Hi-Scan Pro from the cigarette power adapter.
- Insert the power cable from the reprogramming adapter into the cigarette power adapter.
- Connect the cigarette power adapter into the vehicle cigarette power socket.
- Connect the red 10-pin connector from the reprogramming adapter into the white connector below and behind the Data Link Connector (DLC).
Location: Under the instrument panel above the driver's right foot.
- Turn the ignition to the ON position.
- Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON.
- Select option "24. XG300/350 REAR O2 SENSOR " and press ENTER.
- Select option "01. XG300/350 REAR O2 SENSOR [AUTO] and press ENTER.
- Enter "1229" as the password and press ENTER.
- The Hi-Scan Pro will establish communication, check the ECM ID, and reprogram the ECM automatically.
- The boot program will download first, then the main program and the interrupt vector program.
NOTE:
- If the Hi-Scan Pro does not download the program properly, use the Manual Update Procedure following this section.
- After the boot program download, it may go back to the chksum screen twice. This is considered normal during the reprogramming process.WARNING: Do not interrupt the reprogramming at any time. The ECM will be rendered inoperative if the program does not download completely.
- The Hi-Scan Pro establishes communication. See Fig 6 .
- When the REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED message is displayed, the ECM reprogramming process is complete.
NOTE:
- The new ECM ID is displayed when the new ECM software download process is complete.
- Check the new ECM ID displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen to verify that the correct ECM software has been downloaded. Refer to the "ECM SPECIFICATION TABLE" above for the ECM ID listing.
- Turn the Hi-Scan Pro off and turn the ignition key to the off position for 10 seconds. Then start the engine to check for proper operation.
MANUAL UPDATE PROCEDURE
- In the event menu option "01. XG300/350 REAR O2 SENSOR [AUTO]" fails to download the new ECM program, option "02. XG300/350 REAR O2 SENSOR [ERROR]" must be used.
- Confirm all connections are established as shown in the "AUTOMATIC UPDATE PROCEDURE" before continuing.
- Turn the ignition to the ON position.
- Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON and press ENTER.
- Select menu option "24. XG300/350 REAR O2 SENSOR" and press ENTER. See Fig 3 .
- Select menu option "02. XG300/350 REAR O2 SENSOR [ERROR]" and press ENTER.
- Choose the ECM type which is correct for your vehicle by using the ECM SPECIFICATION (above). Then press ENTER.
- Enter the correct password for manual ECM reprogramming by referring to the table below and press ENTER.PASSWORD
Menu Password (Manual Update) 01. XG300 - IMMO: 39110-39077 9077 03. XG350 - IMMO: 39110-39680 9680 NOTE:- Be sure to input the correct password. If an incorrect password is used, the correct ECM software will not be downloaded.
- The rest of the procedure is exactly the same as the automatic update procedure.
- The Hi-Scan Pro will reprogram the ECM. Wait until the reprogramming is completed.
WARNING: Do not interrupt the reprogramming at any time. The ECM will be rendered inoperative if the program does not download completely. See Fig 9 .
- The Hi-Scan Pro establishes communication. See .Fig 6
- When the REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED message is displayed, the ECM reprogramming process is complete. See Fig 10
.NOTE:
- The new ECM ID is displayed when the new ECM software download process is complete.
- Check the new ECM ID displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen to verify that the correct ECM software has been downloaded. Refer to ECM SPECIFICATION for the ECM ID listing.
- Turn the Hi-Scan Pro off and turn the ignition key to the off position for 10 seconds. Then start the engine to check for proper operation.
EXPLANATION OF ERROR MESSAGE
- "INVALID PASSWORD": Please enter the correct password again.
- "REPROGRAMMING ERROR PLEASE WAIT FOR RETRY": An error occurred during reprogramming, the Hi-Scan Pro will retry the reprogramming automatically.
- "ALREADY REPROGRAMMED" or "INCORRECT TARGET ID": The reprogramming has previously been done on this vehicle or the ECM is not the correct type for this reprogramming procedure.
- "REPROGRAM ERROR, PLEASE CHECK THE SYSTEM": In this case you must reprogram manually after selecting the menu option "02. XG300/350 REAR O2 SENSOR [ERROR]".
