Test Procedure

NOTE: After this test, or any subsequent repair, reset the ECM/PCM to clear any codes.

Check the starter engagement:

  1. Remove the fuse No. 8 (10A) from the passenger compartment junction block.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START (III) position with the shift lever in "P" or "N" position (A/T) or with the clutch pedal depressed (M/T). The starter should crank the engine. If the starter does not crank the engine, go to next step. If it cranks the engine erratically or too slowly, go to CHECK FOR WEAR OR DAMAGE  .
  3. Check battery, battery positive cable, ground, starter cut relay, and the wire connections for looseness and corrosion. Repair as necessary and retest system. If the starter still does not crank the engine, go to next step.
  4. Unplug the connector from the starter.
  5. Connect a jumper wire from the battery positive terminal to the solenoid terminal. The starter should crank the engine. If the starter still does not crank the engine, remove starter. See STARTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Diagnose internal starter problem and repair as necessary. If the starter cranks the engine, go to next step.
  6. Check the ignition switch and repair or replace as necessary.
  7. Check the starter relay. See STARTER RELAY TEST  .
  8. Check the automatic transaxle range position switch (automatic transaxle) or the starter clutch pedal position switch (manual transaxle). Adjust or replace as necessary. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH (A/T)  or STARTER CLUTCH PEDAL POSITION SWITCH (M/T)
  9. Check for an open in the wire between the ignition switch and starter. Repair as necessary.
